OP DE TESTBANK
diyPresso One

ON THE TEST BENCH
diyPresso One
In every edition, KTC tests a coffee maker—from grinders to espresso machines.
An espresso machine you can assemble yourself? It exists! With the diyPresso One, you can even customize the machine’s software. Now you can truly say you made that cup of coffee yourself. ITC Academy puts this new machine to the test.
The diyPresso One is a sleekly designed espresso machine made in the Netherlands. It comes with a clear manual that includes step-by-step assembly instructions. We received the machine already assembled, so we can’t say how easy or difficult it is to put together—but we can confirm that the world’s first DIY espresso machine is logically designed and intuitive to use. It’s comparable to other machines that feature a similar brew group.
Only Black Coffee
You activate and stop the water flow with a lever, just like on a traditional E61 brew group (the thermal system developed by Faema in 1961). Heating up is quick—within 3 minutes you can pull your first shot. However, the machine only makes black coffee: the diyPresso One has no steam wand, so cappuccinos are off the table.
The menu offers a wide range of settings, including pre-infusion and the rest time between pre-infusion and the 9-bar pressure phase. The display already shows some features that aren’t active yet, such as crafting advanced recipes and an integrated scale. These will come with a future software update. You can also start tinkering yourself with the open-source software. The makers of the diyPresso challenge anyone with programming skills to further develop the software.
Brewing Coffee
Pulling a shot of espresso works perfectly. After a few tries, the machine consistently delivers exactly what you want: creamy, balanced espressos that taste great. When locking the portafilter into the group head, the machine tends to shift slightly, so you need to be a bit careful.
Our Brewista Smart Scale doesn’t quite fit on the drip tray and ends up sitting directly under the valve, which splashes water after a shot. As a result, the scale often gets a splash or two. Fortunately, the machine can be set to stop automatically after a certain time, so a scale isn’t strictly necessary. Reportedly, a future feature will allow the machine to stop the extraction automatically based on weight—once enough water has come through, it’ll shut off on its own.
Temperature
The diyPresso One’s display is clear and shows both extraction time and boiler temperature. However, that temperature does drop fairly quickly during a shot—sometimes by as much as two degrees. That leads to slightly less consistency, although the espresso still tastes good. We didn’t dive into this ourselves, but there are advanced settings for fine-tuning the PID controller. With some experimentation, the temperature can definitely be stabilized—but it does require time, technical knowledge, and patience.
Conclusion
The diyPresso One is an excellent espresso machine for the handy home barista. Building it yourself gives you a unique insight into how the machine works and lowers the barrier to maintenance or repair. Not all menu features are active yet, but once they are, they’ll definitely add value. All in all: a machine with a lot of potential!
